The football landscape in LaLiga looked completely different back on October 26. Real Madrid had just won the Clásico at the Bernabéu, and everything was rosy for the white half of Madrid, while Barcelona faced mounting doubts in the second year of Hansi Flick’s project. But from that day on, everything changed and the tables turned completely.
After losing to Madrid at the Bernabéu, Barcelona’s players committed themselves to turning the situation around. Their promise has been fulfilled, and now they have clinched the league title for the second consecutive year, having also won the Spanish Super Cup in January.
Following that match at the Bernabéu, Marcus Rashford made a vow that he ultimately kept. The Englishman posted on his Instagram: “Clearly, not the result we wanted yesterday. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and we will keep fighting! 💙❤️”
Now, Barcelona fans recall those words as they celebrate their league triumph.
Rashford’s future remains undecided. The forward would love to stay, but for that to happen, Barcelona must reach an agreement with Manchester United, as they have not exercised the €30 million purchase option. The Catalan club is hoping to pay less.
Speaking to BBC after being crowned champion, Rashford said about his future: “I don’t know. I’m not a magician, but if I were, I would stay. I would stay, so we’ll see. I came here to win. I want to win as many things as possible, and this is another title. Yes, this team is a great team, and they will also win a lot in the future. So being part of that would be something special, so we’ll see.”
He also talked about his goal: “I didn’t intend to shoot. I wasn’t going to shoot because when I placed the ball I didn’t see the right angle. I wasn’t confident it would be a goal, so I intended to send a cross, but everyone was shouting at me to shoot, and then I got a bit more excited, and it’s okay that I ended up shooting. It was a nice goal.”
