Controversial Neymar Named in Brazil’s Preliminary World Cup Squad, Yet Faces Uphill Battle to Make Final Cut

Brazilian sports newspaper Lance! reported on Monday that the Brazilian Football Confederation has submitted a list of 55 preliminary registered players to FIFA, from which the final World Cup squad will be selected.

The list notably includes Neymar of Santos, who is aiming for his fourth World Cup appearance. However, several injured stars were omitted: Real Madrid forward Rodrygo (torn ACL in his right knee suffered in March), 18-year-old Chelsea winger Estevão (right thigh injury on April 18), and Real Madrid defender Militao (left thigh injury on April 24).

Despite being on the preliminary roster, Neymar is far from peak fitness and has struggled with frequent injuries. Analysts suggest his chances of making the final 26-man squad are slim. Adding to the controversy, reports emerged that in early May, during a club training session, Neymar was nutmegged by Robinho Junior, son of former Brazil and Real Madrid star Robinho. Enraged, Neymar allegedly insulted the youngster and slapped him across the face.

The incident has further fueled doubts about his discipline and readiness for the World Cup. With only a limited time to prove his form, Neymar’s path to the tournament remains uncertain.
