The Atlanta Braves placed catcher Sean Murphy back on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a fractured left middle finger. Murphy, who had just been activated from a previous IL stint a week earlier, sustained the injury during a catcher’s interference call in the seventh inning of Sunday’s 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
To fill the void at catcher, the Braves signed 37-year-old free agent Sandy Leon, who previously played for Atlanta during the 2025 season. In a corresponding roster move, the team promoted outfielder Jose Azocar from Triple-A Gwinnett and optioned infielder Jim Jarvis to the minors.
Murphy, 31, has struggled at the plate this season, hitting .071 (1-for-14) in four games. A former All-Star and Gold Glove winner, he owns a career .227 batting average with 93 home runs and 285 RBIs across 608 games with the Oakland Athletics (2019-22) and the Braves.
Leon arrives from Saltillo of the Mexican League and batted .083 (1-for-12) with one home run and three RBIs in five games for Atlanta in 2025. Over his career spanning 562 games with seven teams since 2012, Leon has a .207 average with 32 homers and 152 RBIs.
