José Mourinho is reportedly on the verge of making a sensational return to Real Madrid, with Spanish journalist Ramón Álvarez de Mon claiming that the Portuguese manager will be officially presented at the Santiago Bernabéu in May.
Speaking on social media, the journalist revealed that while Mourinho publicly stated during a pre-match press conference with Benfica that he would not negotiate with any club, including Real Madrid, until the end of the season, his representatives have already held talks with the Spanish giants. “He obviously had to say that,” Álvarez de Mon noted. “I can assure you that his representatives have been in contact with Real Madrid, and Mourinho himself has been involved. He emphasized his deep respect for Benfica, for which he is very grateful.”
According to the report, Real Madrid’s internal process of weighing candidates for the head coach position is already underway. A key supporter of Mourinho’s return within the club is board member Enrique Pérez, the brother of president Florentino Pérez. Enrique Pérez, who is closely tied to on-field matters, reportedly built a strong relationship with Mourinho during the coach’s previous tenure at the club.
The journalist explained that Real Madrid traditionally announces such major decisions after the conclusion of the league season. “They also need to communicate with Arbeloa, who may already know his fate but still requires an official notification from the club,” he added.
Therefore, Álvarez de Mon believes it is nearly certain that Mourinho will be formally unveiled in May, complete with a press conference and inauguration ceremony. From next week onward, Mourinho is expected to offer more hints and speak more freely, as he fulfills his contractual obligations with Benfica. While it is regrettable that he may not lead the Portuguese club to Champions League qualification, he remains proud of his work there, and Benfica has expressed a desire to retain his services.
The news has sent shockwaves through the football world, with rumors swirling that Mourinho’s return could spark major changes at Real Madrid, including a potential overhaul of the squad. The Portuguese manager previously coached Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning the La Liga title in 2012 and establishing a fierce rivalry with Barcelona. His possible comeback comes at a time when the club is under pressure following a disappointing league campaign and internal turmoil.
As the season winds down, all eyes will be on the Bernabéu, where an official announcement could be imminent. Mourinho’s potential return would mark one of the most dramatic managerial reunions in recent football history.
