Golf superstar Rory McIlroy was forced to cut short his practice session ahead of the PGA Championship after developing a painful blister on his right foot.
Rory McIlroy had to abandon his training session early due to a blister on his right little toe. The 37-year-old Northern Irishman, who recently triumphed at the Masters in Augusta, rode a golf cart from the fourth tee back to the clubhouse at Aronimink on Tuesday.
The blister sits under his toenail, making it difficult to treat. McIlroy had already taken off his right shoe earlier in the round to check the small toe, and after removing his sock at the fourth tee, he decided to stop for the day.
“I have a blister on the little toe of my right foot,” McIlroy said after limping during the final round of the PGA Tour event at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. “But it’s under my nail. So I can’t really get to it. It hurts a little, but it will be okay.”
With only one day left before the tournament starts on Thursday, McIlroy will focus on treatment. The world number two is scheduled to tee off at 8:40 a.m. local time alongside Spain’s Jon Rahm and American Jordan Spieth in the first round.
McIlroy had already played a practice round at Aronimink two weeks ago, giving him some familiarity with the course despite the setback.
