In Game 5 of the NBA playoff Western Conference semifinals, the San Antonio Spurs dominated the Minnesota Timberwolves 126-97, taking a 3-2 series lead. After the game, Spurs center Victor Wembanyama spoke with the media about the team’s effort and his coach’s guidance.
Reflecting on the game, Wembanyama emphasized the team’s collective focus on bouncing back from a loss. “We just focused on recovering physically, watching film, and staying sharp in practice. It’s that simple,” he said. “Starting strong was crucial because it sets the tone. The challenge now is to maintain that level of intensity for the full 48 minutes.”
When asked how eager he was to return to the court, the rookie star admitted, “Extremely eager. I feel great physically, but honestly, it’s hard to put into words—this is only Game 5. Obviously, I’m excited and a bit nervous. But being fired up in the playoffs isn’t anything unusual.”
Discussing the team’s defensive performance, Wembanyama highlighted the collective sacrifice required. “Defense is an area where you have to be willing to put in extra effort and make sacrifices. We did a pretty good job in that regard, and we can still improve. When we stay locked in and execute the scouting report, we’re really, really tough to beat.”
On Coach Gregg Popovich greeting the team at the airport, Wembanyama kept details vague but noted the impact. “I won’t reveal what he said, but maybe he wanted to make a statement by being there in person and making his words more powerful. He gives us feedback constantly—during the series, between games. So, as always, when he speaks, everyone listens.”
