Barcelona midfielder Gavi has spoken candidly about his fiery confrontation with Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. during Sunday’s decisive Clásico at Camp Nou. The 21-year-old played a pivotal role in the Blaugrana’s 2-0 victory that clinched the La Liga title, but the match was marked by several tense exchanges between the two rivals.

The latest chapter of football’s greatest rivalry didn’t disappoint in intensity, with Barcelona securing a 2-0 win at the Spotify Camp Nou. Amid celebrations of Barça’s second consecutive league title, Gavi addressed a heated argument with the Real Madrid star. “With Vinicius, it’s just football. What happens on the pitch stays on the pitch. He’s a temperamental player, just like me,” Gavi told Marca. “Vinicius is a fantastic player. I just told him to shut his mouth, that’s all. What happens on the field is one thing, and what happens off it is another. On the field, I defend my colors and give everything. Off the field, I’m completely different, even if it doesn’t seem like it.”
While Gavi used words to unsettle his opponent, Vinicius responded with a non-verbal gesture toward the home crowd, pointing to the stands. The Brazilian was seen reminding Barcelona fans of Real Madrid’s superiority in European titles as the game slipped away from Los Blancos, further fueling the historic rivalry.

For Gavi, the title win was particularly sweet after serious knee injuries derailed the past two seasons. The midfielder fought to recover and regain his spot in Barcelona’s starting lineup, admitting the journey tested his resolve. “Unfortunately, I suffered a lot in the last two years. Those are serious injuries, and you need to be mentally strong, which I have been. It’s one of my strengths. I’m at this level thanks to my mentality. It’s not easy to play at this pace after two serious injuries. I made it, and I’m proud of that,” he said.
Since taking over Barcelona, Hansi Flick has made Gavi a cornerstone of his midfield. The German coach frequently praises the youngster’s dedication, and Gavi returned the sentiment, describing their relationship as one of deep mutual respect and trust. “Fortunately, the coach has a lot of faith in me. I’m very grateful to him. It wasn’t easy to put me back on the pitch after this injury. He knows my talent and my mentality and knows I’m important for the team. He fully trusts me. I know that my mentality and talent are important for the team,” Gavi added.
With the league title secured, attention now turns to the international stage and Gavi’s place in the Spanish national team. Despite suffering one of his worst injuries while playing for La Roja, the midfielder remains committed to Luis de la Fuente’s project and is eager to reclaim a starting spot ahead of the 2026 World Cup this summer. “De la Fuente has always trusted me. I know that. I got injured playing for Spain in that match, and I had started every game under him. I was coming back last season, and he called me up. If I’m at my best, the coach decides what’s best for Spain. I’m more than ready and feeling better than ever,” he concluded.
